History
The Gannett Fleming organization has been providing engineering services to the rail industry since 1918. Our assignments, from the early years to the present, have included the design and construction of new rail and transit lines, bridge structures, rail line relocations, new yards, shops, stations, and modifications to existing terminals. We have been responsible for inspecting existing railroad lines and bridges, clearance projects for double stocks, and the development of design-build projects.
For many years, our organization teamed with Railway Systems Design, Inc. (RSD), based in Media, Pa., because they provided signal, power, catenary, and communications design, which complemented our services. A significant milestone for our organization took place in 1993 when we purchased RSD and added a whole new systems design capability to Gannett Fleming. In 1999, Ross Clarke Associates operations were folded into RSD’s operations. Through the years, systems operations have grown into several office locations with the base of operations in the Valley Forge office, with other employees located in Philadelphia, New York City, and Pittsburgh.
On January 1, 2003, the Gannett Fleming Rail/Track group was combined with our subsidiary Railway Systems Design, Inc. to create Gannett Fleming Transit & Rail Systems (GFT&RS), a division of Gannett Fleming, Inc. GFT&RS provides a wide range of services to private and the public transit and railroad industry. This Division achieved a significant accomplishment in 2004 when auditors certified its Quality Management System as compliant with the internationally recognized ISO 9000:2001 requirements.
