Hudson-Bergen Light Rail MOS-3 Phase Design-Build Project, 22nd Street to 8th Street Extension

Client: New Jersey Transit
Location: Bayonne, N.J.
Construction Cost: $5.7 million

Hudson-Bergen Light RailGannett Fleming, as part of the design-build team with George Harms Construction, served as the general engineering consultant with architect/engineer of record for the extension of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system from the current West Side Ave. terminal to a location near existing residential areas along N.J. Route 440. Our firm identified and evaluated a range of transit options to improve and increase transit service to the areas.

The project involved provisions to the electrification, considering the critical aspects of corrosion control and stray current control. Overhead Catenary System (OCS) poles were mounted along the right-of-way, and structures and bridges capable of supporting the OCS were required. All work was performed while maintaining the system’s continuous power distribution, train control, and communications. A key design issue our firm met was staging the proposed improvements with limited impact to the traveling public.

Our firm designed the new multi-level station facility spanning Avenue C. The facility provides access to adjacent streets with parking, kiss-n-ride, signage, information displays, lighting, landscaping, and canopies. Our firm also coordinated efforts for utilities relocation at Avenue E, North Street, adjacent to the right-of-way.
