Design of Substations Valley Stream and Island ParkIn order to reduce operating and maintenance cost and to provide state-of-the-art DC traction power equipment, the Long Island Rail Road has undertaken a long-term replacement project of the DC traction substations.

Design included the complete replacement of the substation buildings and equipment. The design includes new dual 34 KV primary feeders, AC switchgear and rectifier transformers, rectifiers, DC switchgear, remote control, battery and battery charger, DC ductbanks, and feeders.

Also included with the design for each substation is one 150 KVA motor generator frequency converter set for signal power. The following activities are included in the design effort:

  • Design of substation building and equipment including MG set
  • Design of incoming utility dual feeders
  • Design of DC ductbanks and feeders
  • Provide bid cycle support
  • Site surveying, test borings and geotechnical analysis
  • Environmental assessment
  • Permits and easements
  • Site clearing
  • Design of employee facility building and new parking lot.
