Corporate Data Network
Client: Metro-North Railroad
Location: New York and Connecticut
Value: $13-$15 Million (Construction)
Metro-North Railroad selected GFT&RS and its partners to
develop an upgraded Corporate Data Network utilizing its new
SONET Backbone Network to bring IT connectivity to major campuses
along its rail line in New York and Connecticut.
This project consisted of a variety of tasks commencing with
a survey of existing facilities (shops, warehouses, offices)
at 12 campus locations including Grand Central Terminal. The
purpose of the surveys was to determine the network access requirements
for the various offices, identify physical locations for equipment
rooms, establish cable routing between campus buildings and for
the addition of the campus networks to the new SONET infrastructure
being implemented.
The work included assessment of the data traffic, development
of LAN designs and network interface requirements, preparing
equipment configurations and requirements, sizing equipment rooms,
establishing power and HVAC requirements as well as preparing
implementation cost estimates and a detailed project plan and
timeline for installation at each of the campuses.
The Corporate Data Network will utilize the SONET OC-192/OC-48
ATM network as the transport mechanism among campuses, an optical
LAN among buildings in each campus, and a standards based 100
Mb/s LAN in each building utilizing fiber between equipment rooms
and Category 6, level 7 copper cabling to the desks.
