Network Infrastructure Design Services
Client: Metro-North Railroad
Location: New York and Connecticut
Value: $30,000,000 (Construction)
Metro-North Railroad selected the Joint Venture team of GFT&RS/CWA,
Inc. to develop and design an enhanced telecommunications infrastructure,
including an upgraded fiber optic transmission system to serve
the Authority for the next 10 years. This project consisted of
12 tasks commencing with a survey of existing communication facilities
over 269 route miles of RDD at 106 passenger stations and 69
other sites. The survey was followed by conceptual, preliminary,
and final designs for a state-of-the-art high capacity fiber
optic backbone network supporting a state-of-the-art high-speed
data network.
One of the tasks involved developing an Expression of Interest
(EOI) for third party Regional Carrier Companies (RCCs) to utilize
Metro-North's right-of-way for expansion of the RCC fiber
optic networks. This would involve monetary and/or additional
dark fibers as Metro-North benefits. The EOI resulted in negotiations
with several third parties. Another task involved developing
staffing requirements with a responsibility matrix listing staff
titles and staff workload estimates expected to be required to
manage the proposed system.
The final network infrastructure design consisted of an OC-48
FO core ring connecting four major nodes in New York City and
three OC-12 FO edge rings with 36 nodes on the Hudson, Harlem,
and New Haven Lines. The New Haven Line also included the Danbury
Branch. IS traffic is accommodated by an OC-3 ATM network connecting
12 nodes. Additionally, there will be a Network Management
System, DACS units at Grand Central Terminal and Mott Haven,
and a GPS synchronization system.
