Location: Charlotte, N.C.
Client: North Carolina Department of Transportation, Rail Division
Project Fee: $1.97 million (Planning and Environmental phase)
Gannett Fleming is conducting planning, engineering, and environmental studies for 10 miles of track improvements along the Norfolk Southern (NS) railroad. Our team is completing concept engineering plans, capital costs estimates, a conceptual signal plan, and two environmental documents and is conducting a rail operations analysis. Our firm is coordinating its efforts extensively with the three railroads affected and the Charlotte Area Transit System. This project ultimately contributes to the implementation of the Southeast High Speed Rail Corridor, extending from Charlotte to Washington, D.C.
This improvement project, which is part of the Charlotte Rail Improvement and Safety Program (CRISP), aims to realign the NS mainline, reduce congestion, increase speeds and reliability, and allow for construction of a new passenger rail station in downtown Charlotte. Freight and passenger rail operations and efficiencies improvements and the elimination of inherent safety concerns associated with at-grade roadway/railroad crossings, also are project goals. A second project relating to CRISP includes the grade separation of the two mainline railroads that cross at-grade near the proposed passenger rail station.
