Restoration of 1 & 9 Line Services "A" Division (IRT)

Owner: New York City Transit
Location: New York, NY
Construction Value: $110 Million

Restoration of 1 & 9 Line Services Approximately 1200 lineal feet of the existing subway structure was destroyed or extensively damaged during the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Restoring service this year on this heavily used subway is an important goal of the City of New York. GFA&E is providing track/civil engineering support and signal construction oversight to the general contractor restoring service on NYCT's 1 & 9 Line in lower Manhattan.

The project is moving at a rapid pace and requires the timely development of construction drawings. Our firm is developing construction stakeout drawings based on modifications to the horizontal and vertical alignment of the original structure. Currently, we are developing the following layouts for the general contractor: subgrade and mud slab; placements of steel frames; and location of duct banks and edge of station platforms. The complex horizontal and vertical track alignment requires a detailed review of clearances on the numerous curves. We are also evaluating the existing "as–built" alignments at the tie-in points to determine the extent of modifications that may be required on the new alignment and new subway structure. Our firm is providing on-site track/civil and signal representatives to help address any questions or unforeseen problems as the new subway infrastructure is constructed.

Restoration of 1 & 9 Line Services NYCT contracted Safetran Systems to design the signal system and furnish the equipment. Our firm is providing signal construction oversight to the Prime Contractor coordinating between NYCT, Safetran, and the subcontractor. Our role is to review the construction work and test plans to ensure that the project stays on schedule and to make recommendations when corrective action is needed. The project was completed on month ahead of the 9-11-02 goal.
