Neshaminy/Trenton Line Derailment Design And Construction Support

Client: Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority
Location: Trevose, PA
Value: $500k (Construction)

Neshaminy/Trenton Line Derailment Design And Construction SupportGannett Fleming provided emergency detailed design and construction support services for the reconstruction of two miles of catenary and a portal that was destroyed by a CSXT freight train derailment. On-site field support was provided during an entire 96-hour work window to assure the Railroad would be put back in service as soon as possible.

The project involved one route mile of existing two-track, steel portal frame catenary structures that supported two mainline catenary systems, crossover catenary, transmission wires, and signal cables

The existing catenary system was completely torn down between air breaks (including the crossover) when the freight train derailed and demolished catenary structure 21/4. GFT&RS was on site the following morning with a structure design that would accommodate a quick construction schedule. Within hours, construction began on the new catenary structure and a temporary support system to support the catenary. Trolley Wire profiles were designed as messenger wires were being installed. The hanger tabulations provided by GFT&RS aided in expediting the catenary construction. Initially, only the main line tracks were restored to service. Full-time construction supervision was provided by GFT&RS to address construction issues.

Following service restoration, we provided a design to replace the destroyed crossover wire, as well as design for an additional new crossover wire to facilitate a universal interlocking at this location.
