Client: Regional Public Transportation Authority
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Value: $1 Billion (Construction)

Light Rail Project AlignmentOur firm performed conceptual and preliminary rail engineering support for the proposed 20-mile Central Phoenix/East Valley Light Rail System. In support of the final environmental impact statement (FEIS), we were responsible for evaluating several LRT alignment and profile alternatives; technical narratives; shop and yard location studies including development of several conceptual storage yard layouts for the preferred sites; evaluating types of embedded and cover track; and assisting in the resolution of technical issues relating to Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way and railroad/LRT operations. During the Preliminary Engineering Phase, we were responsible for the development of preliminary engineering plans and specifications for the entire 20-mile proposed light rail system including the LRV maintenance shop and yard, operations control center, and maintenance-of-way complex. Responsibilities included trackwork design and standards; roadway, track, and platform typical designs and sections; platform clearance criteria; and roadway/LRT alignment interaction studies. Our duties included providing architectural support and identifying right-of-way needs and preparing supporting documents for ROW acquisition during the preliminary engineering phase.

Maintenance Facility Site LocationIn addition, we are developing the final communication design and specifications for:

  • SONET-based Fiber Optic Network
  • ADA compliant VMS and PA systems and CCTV systems for both the Yard and 28 stations
  • EPABX with remote modules to support the Maintenance Facility, OCC, and Passenger Assist Phones at the stations.

Services Provided:

  • Developed a conceptual equipment list, proposed maintenance/operating costs and projected number of workers and parking requirements for maintenance shop and yard facilities.
  • Conducted a site selection evaluation of 14 LRV maintenance shop, MOW support and storage yard sites to accommodate a fleet of 100 low-floor articulated LRVs, and developed a conceptual-level cost estimate for the maintenance shop and yard complex.
