Frankford Transportation Center Construction Support

Client: Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority
Location: Philadelphia, Pa.
Firm’s Fee: $1.1 million

Gannett Fleming provided detailed construction management services for the Frankford Transportation Center, the northernmost terminal station for Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) Market-Frankford Line, which links the main line with Bridge Street Yard. Our firm completed construction inspection services for trackwork, signal work, and was responsible for overseeing the building of the platform canopy for the new station stop.

Our firm provided the trackwork inspectors responsible for construction inspection of the initial layout and the final assembly of the low-restraint, direct-fixation (DF), two-track main line, using top-down construction. The project included one No. 5 DF single crossover and one No. 8 DF double crossover.

Our firm constructed a temporary, offset aerial alignment to maintain revenue service until track, power, and signal cutovers were completed. Our firm provided onsite field support throughout a temporary outage to allow the railroad to resume service as soon as possible. One of the new bridge spans, the No. 8 DF double crossover, was initially assembled, constructed, and inspected offsite for conformity. The trackwork was later disassembled, transported to the actual location, and reassembled. The new aerial alignment connects the existing guideway to the existing maintenance yard via a new terminal by utilizing bridges on both approaches to the facility.
