Wayne Junction To Glenside Systems Improvement Project

Client: Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA)
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Value: $55 Million (Construction)

Wayne Junction To Glenside Systems Improvement ProjectGannett Fleming provided Preliminary Engineer and Final Design services for rehabilitation and upgrading of 7.6 miles of SEPTA's Regional Rail Mainline. Services included inspection of structures, track, catenary and signal systems; design of three new motor alternator sets; upgrading of signal system to bi-directional cab signals with improved block layout to optimize train throughput; track improvements; reconfiguration of four interlockings; design of a new fiber optic communications system; catenary modifications; elimination of a retired passenger station; sampling and remediation of PCB contamination, asbestos, and lead paint; renewal of two rail-highway grade crossings; drainage and miscellaneous right-of-way improvements.

A key element of the project was the construction staging. All work was scheduled to be performed during weekend service outages, with rail traffic of 190 trains per day maintained during the week. Careful consideration of the constructability issues was required, including: availability of materials, contractor work areas, access to site, disruption of rail traffic, coordination with other agencies, and staging requirements.

The project was divided into four construction packages providing for advance work, items necessary for upgrading the signal system, track improvements, and catenary renewal.
