Frankford Transportation Center Construction
Support
Owner: Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation
Authority
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Firm Fee: $500,000
Our firm provided detailed construction support
services for this project. Our work consisted
of supplying construction inspection services
for trackwork, signal work and oversight for
construction of the platform canopy for the new
station stop.
GFT&RS provided trackwork inspectors that
were responsible for initial layout and final
assembly of the low-restraint, direct fixation
(DF), two track main. The project used the "top-down" method
of construction. The project included one No.
5 DF single crossover and one No. 8 DF double
crossover. The design allowed for a final offset
alignment in order to maintain revenue service
until cut-over was performed during a nine-day
track outage. Nine existing bridge spans were
demolished and replaced with new spans connecting
to the revised alignment and structures. The
new spans included the No. 8 DF double crossover.
The No. 8 double crossover was initially assembled
and constructed off-site and inspected for
conformity. The special trackwork was then disassembled,
trucked to the final location, and reassembled
during the track outage.
On-site field support was provided 24 hours
per day during the entire nine-day outage to
assure the railroad would be put back in service
as soon as possible and within the work window.
