Media-Sharon Hill Priority Trolley Signal System

Client: Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority
Location:
Delaware County, Pa.
Cost: $274,846

Media-Sharon Hill Priority Trolley Signal SystemGannett Fleming designed a new priority trolley signal system for selected highway grade crossings on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s Media-Sharon Hill Trolley Line. The highway crossing warning system utilizes standard traffic signal lights to govern vehicle movements across the highway grade crossing. The system’s design prioritizes trolley movements through the crossing by stopping all vehicular traffic before the trolley approaches the crossing to allow it to safely travel through without having to reduce its speed or stop for vehicular traffic.

The system utilizes vital microprocessor-based control systems, check-in/check-out logic, and inductive loops for train and vehicle detection. Adjacent highway grade crossings communicate with one another through an IP-based vital serial communications link and fiber-optic cable.
