Charlotte Multi-Modal Station
Client: North Carolina Department of Transportation Rail Division
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Value: $730,000 (Fee)
Gannett Fleming Transit & Rail Systems, under contract to
the NCDOT, prepared functional design plans for a new Rail Passenger
Station in downtown Charlotte. The project will consist of new
tracks and boarding platforms to serve inter-city and commuter
rail passengers as well as a third mainline track for Norfolk
Southern Railroad. As part of the conceptual designs, the station
facility had to accommodate the addition of a high-rise office
complex as well as parking, a linear park, interstate bus service,
and other ancillary facilities.
The project also included a study to determine the feasibility
of grade-separating the NS and CSXT diamonds beneath Interstate
277; providing for continuing rail freight service to the Charlotte
Observer; the potential impacts of proposed improvements on the
ADM/Interstate Milling complex; and the feasibility of connecting
the NS "O" line to the old P & N line now owned
by the NCDOT.
