Desire Streetcar

Gannett Fleming Transit & Rail Systems was responsible for
managing the engineering portion of a Preliminary Engineering and
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) as part of the Program Management
team for a new two track historical streetcar system located within
the French Quarter between Canal Street and Poland Avenue for a
distance of 2.9 miles. The project was named the Desire Streetcar
Line because of the international fame and associated mystique
of the fabled "Streetcar Named Desire".
Special Features:
- Located within both a dedicated median or a shared
travel lane with mixed traffic
- 50 and 100 foot radius flexible tongue switches and
crossovers
- Gauntlet track with specially designed flexible tongue
crossovers due to restrictive right-of-way conditions to connect
the Canal Line with the Desire Line
- At grade crossing with the Norfolk Southern Railroad
- Paved track with a direct fixation fastener system
and rubber rail boot
- 25 streetcar passenger stops
- Roadway traffic signal interface with a separate
streetcar-only signal
- Fluted steel OCS poles with decorative lighting fixtures.
