Dillerville Yard Proposed Track Improvements for Norfolk Southern
Client: Franklin & Marshall College
Location: Lancaster, Pa.
Construction Cost: $25 million
Contract Value: $1.2 million
Gannett Fleming prepared construction plans, specifications, and a cost estimate for the Phase 1 construction of 4,000 feet of additional yard tracks, including eight turnouts, in the proposed rail yard expansion for Norfolk Southern. This project developed as the result of an operational analysis that determined the capacity of Norfolk Southern’s Dillerville Yard was inadequate and required a redesign to meet the needs of the region.

Our firm developed the conceptual, preliminary, and final design for a new 9-track storage yard, including a new unloading team-track trestle, two repair tracks, engine storage tracks, and a new yard office in Phase 2. Our firm constructed three major retaining walls and a private-use vehicular bridge over Harrisburg Pike and designed a major realignment of the existing Dillerville Yard and drill track to facilitate railcar reclassification. Because the project is included in county redevelopment plans for downtown Lancaster, our firm coordinated its efforts with the City of Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration.
